When Resilience Is Just Self-Reliance in Disguise: A Conversation with J. Todd Vinson
Most people who burn themselves out don’t see it coming, because from the outside it looks like strength: always available, always capable, never the one who needs help. That’s what makes it dangerous.
In this episode, Shane sits down with J. Todd Vinson, leadership coach, author of Mountains of My Mind, and founder of Overland Consulting in Norman, Oklahoma. Todd spent decades running a boys ranch before burnout took him down completely. He relearned rest from nothing, and draws a direct line from his own story to prevention work with young people: patterns that start as survival in childhood don’t disappear with age, they just get dressed up as something more acceptable. For some people, that might mean overwork, achievement, or other ways of coping. For Todd, it was work.
It ended the way it usually does: on the floor of his living room, wrapped in his eight-year-old daughter’s Hello Kitty blanket, convinced he was having a heart attack. The tests came back clear. It was a full panic attack, his body forcing the stop his mind had refused to make.
